2024 Happenings - Letter to our Brothers!

Dear Brothers,

Welcome to 2024 and we hope you had a great Holiday Season.

We feel this is really the first year since we became the Executive Committee that we are back to normal. Therefore, we have a lot planned for this year and have news to share.

First, we have decided to change our name to the Sacramento Alumni Chapter of Sigma Chi. We did this because we felt it better reflected our geography and was easier to search and many Chapters have similar names. We will be creating a private Facebook page as well.

We will continue our Quarterly Dinners but now we are adding a philanthropic component. At each dinner we are asking a brother to speak about a non-profit/charity they are passionate about.

At our next Quarterly diner on March 14,Jabin Kille will be speaking about River City Food Bank which is Non-Profit that services the needy in downtown Sacramento & the Arden Areas. Last year they provided food for over 308,000(!) people with an approach centered on treating each person with dignity.  Most of the recipients of food are Elders/Immigrants/and other families suffering from food insecurity.

The day after each dinner, the Alumni Chapter will donate $250 to that Non-Profit/Charity.  We are planning to do 4 of these per year.

For 2024, The Alumni Association is planning the following events:

  • Spring and Fall Golf tournaments that are spearheaded by Brother Michael Gaither, which we continue to appreciate his efforts in making this happen!!
  • “Sigma Chi Grand Prix”: a high octane go-karting event to be held in Rancho Cordova, that we hope can be an annual event.  Come show us your skills behind the wheel!
  • A trip to a local Bourbon distillery in El Dorado Hills for a tasting.
  • Tailgater and BBQ for the Sac State vs UC Davis football game which will be back at Hornet Field this year. Special thanks to Brothers Nelson and Watson for continuing leading these efforts!!
  • Annual dinner and donation to Toys for Tots, spearheaded by Brothers Nelson and Watson!!
  • Quarterly dinners + philanthropic donations

A topic of much interest to many of you is the Recolonization of Sacramento State.  Over the last few years there have been some starts and stops. Ryan McCormick has emailed Sigma Chi International to restart this dialog and the Executive Alumni Team has begun initial conversations with Nationals.  Obviously, we will need support from HQ, Sacramento State, IFC, and one of their first questions will be, "What's the Alumni Support look like?"  As we move forward, we will be following Nationals expansion process which will include outreach to get a core group of 5-10 alumni whom want to help with this 18-24 month journey.  While there is nothing imminent to share about these efforts, we will be providing updates as they become available as it appears that HQ and Sac State are more receptive than previously.

As you are aware, it takes money to run any Alumni Chapter. We pay $300 to HQ every year to have voting rights and access to tools and programs they offer to support us. We use Member Planet for Chapter communications(text and email), collect dues or donations, and create/RSVP to events.  This cost about $600 a year.  We are planning to contribute upwards of $1200 to various charities throughout 2024 plus the many other events we outlined previously.

We are asking for the 2024 year you donate $50 to the Chapter for these endeavors.

Please do this by clicking the Chip In Now.

As you can see, we are fired up and hope you are as well.  The first Quarterly Dinner will be at 6:00 PM March 14th at The Boxing Donkey at 300 Lincoln Street Roseville.  The “Donkey”, located in the historic part (yes, there is one) of downtown Roseville has a classic Irish Pub atmosphere and an excellent variety of food.  An event invite asking for an RSVP will be forthcoming.

IHSV,

Your Executive Committee
